Board Certification for Lawyers – What Does it Mean?
Orlando, Florida
In 1982, the Florida Supreme Court established a board certification process to help recognize a lawyer’s specialized knowledge, abilities, proficiency, professionalism, and ethics in a variety of areas of law. Currently, there are 24 areas of law which qualify for board certification.
Ultimately, board certification serves as a tool which clients can use to identify attorneys who have gone above and beyond to distinguish themselves as experts in that particular area of law. It is the highest level of evaluation bestowed by the Florida Bar of an attorney’s competency and experience.
Criteria for Board Certification
In order to receive board certification, an attorney must be a member of the Florida Bar who has fulfilled the standards established by the Florida Supreme Court. While each area may have additional criteria to be met for board certification, there are certain minimum requirements that must be achieved in all approved areas of law:
- Minimum of five years practicing law
- A satisfactory showing of substantial involvement in the field of law for which certification is sought
- A passing grade on the certification examination
- Satisfactory peer review assessment of competence in the specialty field, character, ethics, and professionalism
- Satisfaction of the certification area’s continuing legal education requirements
Board certification is only bestowed upon a select few attorneys who have demonstrated excellence in the field. Currently, approximately 7% of all eligible Florida Bar members have received board certification. This certification is valid for five years, and lawyers must participate in a certain amount of required continuing education courses during this time. When the five year time period has expired, lawyers may apply for recertification. By requiring periodic recertification, the Florida Bar ensures that all board certified lawyers maintain this high level of excellence and expertise over time.
